Mary Rose Cowden graduated with high honors from The New School's dual-degree program, earning a degree in jazz performance from The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and a degree in psychology from Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. She was also honored with the Dean’s Award from the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. After completing her studies, which included an exchange program at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Mary spent a year abroad, where she established her European band.
Inspired by her mentors Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Rachel Z, and Samora Pinderhughes, Mary seamlessly integrates her jazz roots with a variety of genres and disciplines, challenging traditional notions of songwriting. With an interdisciplinary approach, she infuses her academic research in psychology and philosophy into her lyrics and artistic concepts.
Mary Cowden works professionally as an arranger, musical director, transcriber, teacher, and accompanist. She has transcribed professionally for artists including Sarah Elizabeth Charles. She has arranged, toured, and acted as musical director for Indie artist FIG. Mary has a private teaching practice where she teaches piano, saxophone, vocals, songwriting, and producing.
“It was clear that Mary had something special through the tremendous sense of joy and passion felt in her playing. Her knowledge of harmony, jazz transcriptions, traditional improv techniques, modern improv techniques, great time feel, and inventive lines, position Mary to be one of the top saxophonists in the jazz business!”
